In tonight’s program we are going to provide you the listeners with:

  1. “Your Personal Investment Portfolio” by taking a look back at 2006 and jump-starting your 2007!
    • How did you spend your time, energy, effort and money this past year?
    • How do you intend to invest it in 2007?
    • Have a plan?
We do! Check out your Personal Investment Portfolio Activity!
  2. We will end the program with an inspirational thought that you can carry with you throughout the coming week.

“Your Personal Investment Portfolio"

When we think of an investment portfolio, we usually think of stocks, bonds, and investments in mutual funds for retirement. It is future oriented and usually one has an advisor who makes recommendations as what to invest in.
We are taking the idea of an investment portfolio and applying it to one’s personal life. In this way, it is possible for an individual to take stock of one’s life, past and future direction.

For this evening’s purpose, our personal portfolios will include stocks, bonds, and mutual funds in the following categories (from Dr. Ever’s Cards of Life)

Before we begin, let’s take a look at the terms we are using tonight.

  1. When you break the word into its syllables or 3 sound bytes you get “in” – “vest” – “ment”.
  2. The root word is in the middle of the word and it is the word vest. And when we think of a vest, we think of a piece of clothing you wear.
  3. Another word that arises is the word “vestment”. Again, a vestment is a piece of clothing that a person wears. A priest wears vestments to celebrate Mass. A judge wears a vestment when (s)he presides over a case in the courtroom.
  4. The BIG idea is that an INVESTMENT is something that I personally wear, in which I cloak my body, cover and protect myself with from the elements (protection, safety, and security are implied).

  1. A portfolio is something I carry and is portable.
  2. Port from the French “porter” - to carry.
  3. Folio usually means a “leaf” of paper usually numbered or ordered.

So a Personal Investment Portfolio is the ordered presentation in which I cloth and cover myself, or vest myself. It is that in which I invest myself—put my time, energy/effort and money.

So with that in mind we are going to do what many investors do at this time of year, and that is to review their investment portfolio to check out the “profitability” of their personal portfolio.

The desired end “result” of this review is to increase profitability and that is done by assessing the “Return” On Investments made, that is the R.O.I..

Interestingly, ROI in French means “King”. So you are going to review your “Royal Rule” over “YOUR LIFE”!

The bottom line and the only question that needs to be answered is:

  1. “Is the return on my investment sufficient to be worth keeping?”

The answers:

  1. Yes, (Buy more of this stock)
  2. No, (Sell - Release/Forgive this stock)
  3. Carry, if it is too early to tell because it is a recent investment

Usually at a year-end a decision has to be made: yes (Buy more) or no (Sell off) to maximize profitability.
I can choose to carry my investment forward, as is, with its ++pluses++ and --minuses--, or I can carry it forward with changes I make to increase the probability of increasing my profitability (the ability to profit).

Activity - Applying the Personal Investment Portfolio Strategy to My Life

So let’s now apply these terms of reference to review your Personal Investment Portfolio and check out how you are doing in your life.

To do this section of the activity, you need to download and print the pdf formatted worksheets from the web.
Download Dec. 27, 2006 - Personal Investment Portfolio Worksheet by clicking here.

There are two worksheets that you are going to use.
Worksheet One has 6 major columns with two sub-columns and Worksheet Two has 4 columns. Both worksheets list the same categories in the first column.
Blank copies are included so that you can create and address the areas of your life that have the most meaning to you.

Sample of Worksheets

1. You do columns Desired Outcome to Actual Outcome on Worksheet One first.
2. Upon completion of those columns, go to Worksheet Two and complete all three columns of the worksheet. Answer all the questions honestly. The greater your honesy, the greater the likelihood of you creating what you want.
3. After completing Worksheet Two, return to Worksheet One and fill in the final Two Sections, Investment Strategy (IS) and Future Directions (Rewrite your Action Plan here)
4. Post Worksheet One where you can see it.
5. Review often and celebrate your successes!

Completed Sample of Worksheets

You may choose to use the following worksheet format to help you complete the Future Direction section of the worksheet.
This worksheet will make sure that you cover all the key questions to ensure your success.

Completed Sample of Worksheet Two

IDEA: You may choose to place little boxes in front of the action plan steps and check them off as you complete those steps.

Focus on no more than two categories at any one time. To avoid overwhelm - The 1% Solution

Review often and celebrate your successes.
Be flexible and adapt to changes along the way!

Inspirational Thoughts

"To dream anything that you want to dream, that is the beauty of the human mind.
To do anything that you want to do, that is the strength of the human will.
To trust yourself, to test your limits, that is the courage to succeed."
